Voltello Web Onboarding (Beta): Solar & Battery Installer Guide

This guide is designed for accredited solar and battery electricians, field technicians, and commissioning agents using the hosted Voltello Web Onboarding Wizard (Beta).

It details how to independently commission residential and commercial energy storage systems on site using Flow B (Installer-Led Delegated Onboarding) without needing to download an app or access the customer's personal device.

1. Executive Summary & Flow B Benefits

In residential solar and battery installations, homeowners are frequently not at home or are unavailable while the electrical work is being carried out. Flow B solves this friction:

  • No Customer App or Account Handover: The homeowner does not need to install an app or share their personal credentials with the technician.
  • Dual-2FA Handshake:
    1. The homeowner generates a 6-digit Customer Authorisation Code valid for 24 hours or more and forwards it to the installer (via SMS, email, or job sheet).
    2. The installer enters the customer code alongside their own Installer Email, verifies their own 6-digit PIN, and commissions the site.
  • Automatic Site Ownership & Delegated Support Access:
    • The customer is automatically created/activated as the primary Site Owner (service_entity_owner_access).
    • The installer’s account is created/activated and granted 'approved' Delegated Access (service_entity_delegated_access). This allows the installer company to view site telemetry, monitor device health, and perform maintenance checks remotely without customer login credentials.
  • Automated Device Discovery & CSIP-AUS Enrollment: The backend automatically drives LinkPro Modbus sweeps, creates endpoints with default nicknames, auto-detects grid phases from the primary meter, resolves the local DNSP, and registers dynamic export contracts.

2. Pre-Commissioning Field Checklist & Hardware Setup

Before opening the Web Onboarding Wizard, ensure the physical hardware is installed and powered according to the following mandatory rules:

1. Mandatory Physical Connections
  • Ethernet Connection: Connect the Voltello LinkPro's LAN port directly to an active Ethernet port on the customer’s home router or network switch using a tested Cat5e/Cat6 patch cable.
  • Power Supply: Connect the LinkPro using the supplied 5V USB-C power supply. Confirm the gateway power LED is illuminated.
  • Modbus TCP: Verify that the inverter, battery, or smart meter has Modbus TCP enabled.

2. The 10-Minute Over-The-Air (OTA) Rule

Important

Why you must wait 10 minutes before starting software onboarding:

  • When the LinkPro powers on with an active internet connection, it establishes an encrypted MQTT connection to the Village Energy AWS IoT Core cloud.
  • If the LinkPro is running older firmware, the cloud automatically pushes the latest Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware package.
  • The gateway downloads, flashes, and reboots with the updated firmware. This process requires approximately 2 to 5 minutes.
  • Attempting to initiate Modbus discovery while an OTA update is actively downloading or flashing can cause gateway reboot panics (ESP-RST-PANIC) and communication timeouts.
  • Best Practice: Plug in the LinkPro as soon as you arrive on site. Complete your inverter/battery cabling, and by the time you open the Web Onboarding Wizard, the 10-minute OTA window will have elapsed cleanly.

3. Step-by-Step Flow B Commissioning Walkthrough

Step 1: Access the Web Onboarding Wizard (Flow B)

Open the web wizard on your smartphone, tablet, or laptop: https://msapi.vecddevau1.village.energy/webhook/handler/voltello/onboard-installer (Or https://msapi.vecddevau1.village.energy/webhook/handler/voltello/onboard-installer?flow=b)

(Note: The page defaults to Flow B (Installer). If needed, you can toggle between Flow B and Flow A using the header switch).

Step 2: 2FA Initiation & Customer PIN Pre-Check

In the Step 1: 2FA Initiation form:

  1. Primary OEM Brand: Select the primary make installed on site (e.g. Bluetti, EcoFlow, Fimer, FranklinWH, Fronius, Haier, Huawei, IAMMETER, iStore, Pylontech, SMA, Solis, Sonnen, Sungrow).
  2. Customer Email Address: Enter the homeowner’s email address.
  3. Customer 24h Authorisation PIN: Enter the 6-digit PIN forwarded by the customer (e.g., 482910).

[!TIP] If the customer hasn't generated a code yet, send them to: https://msapi.vecddevau1.village.energy/webhook/handler/voltello/onboard-authorize?email=customer@example.com

  4. Installer Email Address: Enter your official installer/electrician email address (e.g., mike@solarpartner.com.au).
  5. Click "Verify Customer PIN & Send Installer 2FA Code".

What happens immediately:

  • The backend verifies that the customer's 6-digit authorisation code is valid and was created within its 24-hour+ window.
  • A draft installer customer record is created (if this is your first install).
  • A 6-digit verification PIN is emailed to your installer inbox.
  • The wizard advances to Step 2: Site & Hardware.

Step 3: Site, Hardware & Automation Details

In the Step 2 form, enter the commissioning details:

1. Verification Code

  • Installer 6-Digit Verification PIN: Enter the 6-digit code received in your installer email.

2. Customer Details (Service Entity Owner)

  • First Name & Last Name: Customer contact name.
  • Customer Mobile: Customer Australian contact number (e.g. 0411223344).

3. Installer Profile (Granted Delegated Site Access)

  • Installer First & Last Name: Your technician name.
  • Installer Mobile: Your contact number. (These details populate your delegated installer profile for ongoing site monitoring).

4. Service Entity (Installation Address & NMI)

  • Street Address, Suburb, State, Postcode: Customer site address.
  • National Metering Identifier (NMI): Enter the 10- or 11-digit NMI from the customer’s electricity bill (e.g., QB01234567). The system automatically normalises casing and verifies checksums.

5. LinkPro Gateway & Multi-Brand Equipment

  • LinkPro Gateway Serial Number: Enter the serial number from the product label on the side of the LinkPro (alongside the QR code, e.g., 009800ABC123).
  • Primary Target Device Type: Select Battery Storage (AC / Hybrid), Smart Solar Inverter, or Smart Meter.
  • Additional OEM Brands on Site (Sequential Multi-Brand Discovery):
    • If the site features multiple equipment makes (for example, a new AC-coupled battery retrofit on an existing Fronius or Sungrow solar array), check the box for each additional brand present.
    • The backend will queue and scan each brand sequentially, preventing Modbus collision.
  • Inverter Series (Solis / Fimer): If commissioning Solis or Fimer, select the appropriate model family (gridtied, hybrid, uno, or pvs).
  • Sonnen Auth Token: If commissioning a Sonnen battery, enter the local API authorisation token.

6. Grid / VPP Automation Program & Phase Detection

  • Automation Program:
    • CSIP-AUS Dynamic Export / VPP (Default): Automatically detects the local DNSP from the NMI, creates the utility contract, and executes dynamic export verification.
    • None: Select this if the customer only requires local energy monitoring and does not participate in dynamic export limits.
  • Connection Phases (Fully Optional):
    • Grid Connection Phases: Fully optional. By default, leave on **Auto-Detect** — the backend dynamically inspects the discovered primary smart meter's registers (`connection.numberPhases` or model series) to detect 1-phase vs. 3-phase, or can be explicitly selected (`1-Phase`, `2-Phase`, `3-Phase`).
    • DER Connection Phases:  Fully optional. Use when inverter or battery phases differ from the grid connection (e.g. a single-phase solar or battery system installed on a three-phase grid connection).
    • Or manually override with 1-Phase or 3-Phase.

Click "Verify & Start Automated Commissioning".

Step 4: Real-Time Commissioning Dashboard

The wizard automatically transitions to Step 3: Live Discovery and begins polling the backend every 4 seconds.

You will see confirmation of:

  • Customer ID: Active homeowner profile.
  • Installer ID: Active technician profile.
  • Delegated Access: Marked as Approved.
  • Service Entity ID: Registered site identifier.
[✔] 1. Customer & Installer Account Activation — completed
[✔] 2. Service Entity & Delegated Access Setup — completed
[✔] 3. LinkPro IoT Gateway Heartbeat — online (signal active)
[✔] 4. Modbus Multi-Brand Device Discovery — completed (Discovered 3 endpoints)
[✔] 5. CSIP-AUS / Grid Automation Enrollment — completed (Contract verified)

Note

Modbus Scan Pacing: The LinkPro scans local Modbus registers over 60–90 seconds and enforces a 5-second non-volatile flash commit delay before hardware reboot. The progress bar will indicate "Discovered X endpoint(s), completing local network scan..." while the gateway writes configurations to memory. Do not power off the gateway while this step is active.

When all steps display COMPLETED, the site is fully operational! Click "Commission Another Site" if you have another job to perform.

4. Installer Delegated Access Explained

Once Flow B onboarding completes, your installer customer record has 'approved' delegated access (service_entity_delegated_access) to the customer's site:

CapabilityHomeowner (Site Owner)Installer (Delegated Access)
Site Ownership✅ Yes❌ No
Live Solar / Battery Telemetry View✅ Yes✅ Yes
View System Health & Alerts✅ Yes✅ Yes
Remote Troubleshooting & Diagnostic Logs❌ No✅ Yes
Participate in VPP Dynamic Exports✅ Yes✅ Configured

Installers can view all delegated customer sites from the Voltello mobile app or web portal using their installer email address.

5. Field Troubleshooting for Installers

1. Customer 2FA Code Error: CUSTOMER_PIN_EXPIRED or INVALID_PIN

  • Verify the customer generated the code using the Customer Pre-Authorization page with a 24h+ validity window.
  • Verify there are no typos in the customer's email address (emails are case-insensitive and whitespace-trimmed).

2. LinkPro Heartbeat Shows "Offline"

  • Verify the LinkPro's Ethernet cable is plugged into a live router LAN port (check link LEDs on the router).
  • Verify the gateway has been powered on for at least 10 minutes so that any automatic Over-The-Air (OTA) updates have finished.
  • Power-cycle the LinkPro once if the local router DHCP did not assign an IP address.

3. Modbus Discovery Discovers 0 Endpoints

  • Ensure Modbus TCP is enabled in the inverter's installer menu.

4. NMI Conflict: NMI_ALREADY_REGISTERED

  • If the site was previously onboarded under another account, the backend blocks duplicate ownership. Contact Village Energy Support (support@village.energy) with proof of installation to transfer the site.
