Introducing Voltello Web-Based Smart Onboarding (Beta)

Note

Beta Feature Soft-Launch: Web-Based Smart Onboarding is currently in soft-launch (Beta) across all Voltello environments. It is available as a lightweight, browser-based alternative to the Voltello mobile app for customers and accredited field installers.

1. What is Web-Based Smart Onboarding?

Voltello Web-Based Smart Onboarding allows homeowners, property managers, and accredited solar and battery installers to commission energy systems, connect hardware, and register for Dynamic Export / CSIP-AUS Virtual Power Plant (VPP) programs directly from a standard web browser on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop—without needing to download or install the Voltello mobile app.

Whether you are a homeowner setting up your own system or an installer commissioning equipment on a customer's roof and garage, the web interface handles account creation, device discovery, and grid compliance smoothly through an automated, browser-guided workflow.

2. Web Onboarding vs. Voltello Mobile App

The hosted web interface is designed to complement our native mobile app. Here is a quick comparison to help you choose the best method for your situation:

Tip

Best of Both Worlds: You can commission your site using the Web Onboarding portal today. Once completed, your customer account and site will be fully active, and you can log into the Voltello mobile app at any time using the same email address to view daily energy flow graphs, battery state of charge, and live tariff optimisation.

3. The Two Onboarding Pathways: Flow A & Flow B

The web interface supports two distinct operating flows:

Flow A: Customer-Led Direct Onboarding

  • Who it is for: Homeowners and business owners commissioning their own site, or an installer working directly alongside the homeowner.
  • How it works:
    1. The customer opens the web portal and requests a 6-digit verification code sent to their email.
    2. The customer enters the 6-digit PIN, site address, National Metering Identifier (NMI), and LinkPro serial number.
    3. The system verifies identity, provisions the customer as the verified Site Owner, and automatically starts LinkPro device discovery.
  • Guide: See Customer & Homeowner Guide: Web-Based Onboarding.

Flow B: Installer-Led Delegated Onboarding (Dual-2FA Handshake)

  • Who it is for: Accredited solar, battery, and electrical installers commissioning systems in the field, especially when the homeowner is at work or unavailable during installation.
  • How it works:
    1. Customer Pre-Authorisation: The homeowner opens the Customer Pre-Authorisation page and generates a 24-hour+ authorisation code (customerPin) sent to their email, then forwards this 6-digit code to the installer via SMS, email, or job sheet.
    2. Installer Commissioning: On site, the installer enters the customer's email, customer authorisation code, and their own installer email to receive an installer verification code.
    3. Dual-2FA Site Submission: The installer enters their code, site details, LinkPro serial number, inverter/battery brands, and grid automation preferences.
    4. Automated Site Ownership & Delegated Access: The backend establishes the homeowner as the Service Entity Owner and automatically grants the installer 'approved' Delegated Access so they can monitor and maintain the site.
  • Guide: See the Installer Commissioning Guide: Web-Based Onboarding.

4. Critical Hardware Requirements Before You Begin

Before opening the web onboarding portal, the Voltello LinkPro gateway must be physically connected and ready:

Important

The 10-Minute Pre-Connection Rule:

  1. Ethernet Connection: Connect the Voltello LinkPro directly to your home internet router or network switch using the provided RJ45 Ethernet cable. (Do not rely on Wi-Fi during initial setup.)
  2. Power via USB: Plug the included USB-C cable into the LinkPro and connect it to a stable 5V wall power outlet.
  3. Wait at least 10 minutes before starting onboarding:
    • When the LinkPro first powers on with an active internet connection, it contacts the Village Energy IoT cloud to verify firmware integrity.
    • If a newer firmware version is available, it downloads and applies an Over-The-Air (OTA) update automatically.
    • Starting onboarding while an OTA update is actively in progress can disrupt Modbus device discovery. Giving the device 10 minutes guarantees that the gateway is fully updated, online, and ready for Modbus network scans.

For complete step-by-step physical installation instructions, refer to the Voltello LinkPro Hardware Setup Guide.

5. Information You Will Need

Before starting your web onboarding session, please have the following details ready:

  1. Customer Email Address: The homeowner's primary email address (used for account ownership, security verification, and monthly VPP summaries).
  2. National Metering Identifier (NMI): A 10- or 11-character identifier found on the customer's electricity bill (e.g., QB01234567 or 2001001234).
  3. Voltello LinkPro Serial Number: Located alongside the QR code on the product label on the side of the LinkPro gateway (e.g., 009800ABC123).
  4. Primary Equipment Brand: The make of the primary smart inverter, battery, or smart meter installed on site (e.g., EcoFlow, Bluetti, Fronius, Sungrow, Solis, Sonnen, SMA, Huawei, FranklinWH, iStore, Fimer, Haier, IAMMETER, Pylontech).
  5. Additional Equipment Brands (if applicable): Any secondary brands present on the same site (e.g., an EcoFlow or Bluetti AC-coupled battery retrofitted onto an existing Fronius or Sungrow solar array).
